NCAA Div 1: Maryland Terps Down Duke

COLLEGE PARK, Md, November 3. THE Maryland swimming and diving teams each picked up victories today over ACC foe Duke, with the women defeating the Blue Devils 147-85, and the men winning 139-98. The women (6-0, 3-0) remain unbeaten, and the men (3-3, 1-2) pulled to even with their first conference win of the season.

Maryland Junior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) took first in the 500- and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 4:58.55 and 10:09.79, respectively. She also finished fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.80). Junior Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.) also picked up two victories with wins in the 50-yard freestyle (23.65) and 100-yard freestyle (52.45). Junior Rebecca Rudolph (Marietta, Ga.) swept the diving events, scoring 180.80 in the 1-meter board and 168.10 in the 3-meter board.

Other winners for the women included sophomore Inbal Levavi (Ichad, Israel) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.58), junior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) in the 200-yard individual medley and junior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.87). Sophomore Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) had the fastest time in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.33). Levavi also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.09).

The Terps took the top four spots in the 50-yard freestyle with Weir, senior Jenny Brian (Cockeysville, Md.), freshman Amber Walter (Kalispell, Mont.) and freshman Martha Whistler (Orchard Park, N.Y.).

Maryland's 400-yard medley relay team of Knepper, Kovacs, Mulyayeva and Whistler took first with a time of 3:50.39, and the Terps' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Mulyayeva, Knepper, Weir and Walter also had the fastest time (3:30.27).
The men were led by senior Mark Hill (Rye Brook, N.Y.), who won both sprint freestyle events with times of 20.63 in the 50 and 46.18 in the 100. Senior Steve Vigilante (Plano, Texas) swept the diving events, scoring 178.25 on the 1-meter board and 187.30 on the 3-meter board.

Other winners for the men included junior Chris Brandenberger (Stony Brook, N.Y.) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.05), junior Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) in the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.26) and junior Brad Schertle (Baltimore, Md.) in the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.34). Schertle also finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:42.00, and Brandenberger was runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.49).

The Maryland men took the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle with Hill, junior Mike Fried (Ambler, Pa.) and freshman Kevin Ford (Sinking Spring, Pa.). Fried also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.21, while Ford finished fourth with a 47.87. They also swept the relays, with the 400-yard medley team of Weinberg, junior Gergo Szekely (Szentes, Hungary), Fried and sophomore Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.) winning with a time of 3:28.35, and the 400-yard freestyle team of Hill, Ford, Weinberg and Doyle taking first with a time of 3:09.32.
