During the first full prelims session of the men’s ACC championships in Greensboro, N.C., the NC State Wolfpack claimed the top seeds in all three events, and on all three occasions, it was the reigning ACC champion who qualified first. Looking for their fourth straight conference title, the Wolfpack will have eight A-finalists for Thursday night’s finals session.
Kicking things off in the 500 free, NC State senior Anton Ipsen laid down a strong 4:14.67 to take the top spot, and his freshman teammate Eric Knowles took second in 4:15.46. Virginia’s Sam Magnan claimed third in 4:15.64.
Notre Dame’s Zach Yeadon (4:16.27) and Virginia’s Robby Giller (4:16.95) took fourth and fifth, respectively, and they were followed by two more Wolfpack swimmers, Danny Erlenmeyer (4:17.51) and Gil Kiesler (4:17.59).
Louisville’s Marcelo Acosta, the defending conference champion in the 1650 free, took eighth in 4:18.01, knocking last year’s 500 free runner-up, North Carolina’s Henry Campbell, out of the final with his time of 4:18.49.

NC State’s Andreas Vazaios picked up first in the men’s 200 IM prelims, setting up a defense of his title from last year. He posted a time of 1:42.62 to beat out Virginia Tech’s Norbert Szabo (1:43.72) by more than a second.
Notre Dame’s Rob Whitacre qualified third in 1:44.22, with the Louisville trio of Daniel Sos (1:44.72), Etay Gurevich (1:44.81) and Carlos Claverie (1:44.89) also getting under 1:45.
Virginia’s Bryce Keblish (1:45.04) and Florida State’s Max Polianski (1:45.12) took seventh and eighth, respectively.

To put a cap on the brief morning session, NC State’s Ryan Held and Justin Ress posted the top two times in the 50 free. Held came in at 18.86, with Ress just behind in 18.96. Those two join Caeleb Dressel (18.66) as the only men to officially break 19 seconds so far this season.
(Auburn’s Zach Apple posted an 18.91 leading off his team’s 200 free relay at the SEC championships last week, and after his team was disqualified on the second changeover, his time does not appear to count.)
Louisville’s Andrej Barna, who delivered the Cardinals a win in the 200 medley relay with an 18.54 anchor split, came in third in qualifying in 19.16. Florida State’s Will Pisani took fourth in 19.28.
Other A-finalists include Virginia Tech’s Ian Ho (19.38), NC Stae’s Giovanni Izzo (19.39), Florida State’s Chad Myin (19.43) and Notre Dame’s Justin Plaschka (19.51).
