Mitch Larkin Leads 200 Back Prelims at 2015 FINA World Championships

Australia’s Mitch Larkin clinched the top seed in the men’s 200-meter back prelims at the 2015 FINA World Championships.

Larkin clocked the only 1:55 of the day with a 1:55.88. That’s a bit off his second-ranked time fo 1:55.52.

Japan’s Ryosuke Irie, the top-ranked swimmer in the world with a 1:54.62 from January, qualified second in the event with a 1:56.68.

USA’s Ryan Murphy, a definite rising star for the American, qualified third in 1:56.71 to move just outside the top 10 in the world rankings.

Russia’s Evgeny Rylov (1:56.78), China’s Xu Jiayu (1:56.90) and USA’s Tyler Clary (1:56.92) also posted 1:56s to rounded out the top six.

Germany’s Christian Diener (1:57.42), Australia’s Josh Beavers (1:57.62), Japan’s Masaki Kaneko (1:57.63), Brazil’s Leonardo De Deus (1:57.73) and Russia’s Grigory Tarasevich (1:57.77) qualified seventh through 11th in the 1:57 range.

China’s Li Guangyuan (1:58.02), Poland’s Radoslaw Kawecki (1:58.09), New Zealand’s Corey Main (1:58.22), Italy’s Luca Mencarini (1:58.31) and Hungary’s Gabor Balog (1:58.55) also earned spots in the semifinal heats.
