NEW COMMIT: Minneapolis, Minn. native Elle Niebuhr has opted to stay in-state for her college career after verbally committing to the University of Minnesota beginning in the fall of 2020.

Niebuhr swims year-round with Edina Swim Club and most recently competed in six events at NCSAs this past summer after finaling in a pair of events at Minneapolis Sectionals. Last winter, she had a strong showing at NCSAs and raced at the Speedo Grand Challenge.

Also competing for Minneapolis Southwest High School, Niebuhr is a three-time Minnesota Class AA State Championship finalist. She earned bronze in the 500 free and took 10th in the 200 free as a junior after finishing third in the former event during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Minnesota!! I can’t wait to join such an amazing team and school! #SkiUMah”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 24.16
  • 100 free – 51.98
  • 200 free – 1:52.09
  • 400 IM – 4:29.85

Niebuhr will add valuable freestyle and IM depth to the Gophers’ lineup when she arrives on campus at the start of the 2020-21 season. Although she’s just on the outskirts of scoring range at the Big Ten Championships, Niebuhr has consistently made improvements each season and will look to carry her recent long course momentum heading into this upcoming short course season.
