Minnesota Gains Pair of Verbals From Rachel Butler, Maggie Erwin

NEW COMMITS: The Golden Gophers have grown by two more for next fall after recent verbal commitments from Rachel Butler and Maggie Erwin. They will suit up for Minnesota as a members of the class of 2023.

A native of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, Butler does her club swimming with Cottonwood Heights Aquatics and is a four-time Junior National qualifier. She raced three events at Juniors over the summer and was the 200 back runner-up at Four Corners Speedo Sectionals in March. She won four events at the Utah Senior Championships in February with a pair of lifetime bests.

Also representing Brighton High School, Butler is a five-time Utah State Championship finalist. The NISCA All-American won the 200 IM and was the 500 free runner-up at 4A State as a junior. She placed first in the 500 free and second in the 200 IM at 5A during her sophomore campaign after winning the latter as a freshman.

She told Swimming World:

“Minnesota offers the perfect balance of swim and school with their outstanding programs both in and out of the water. On my visit, I fell in love with the campus and felt at home with the team, making it the place for me.”

Her best times include:

  • 200 IM – 2:02.67
  • 400 IM – 4:25.28
  • 100 back – 57.53
  • 200 back – 1:58.69

Maggie Erwin

Hailing from Boise, Idaho, Erwin swims year-round with Boise YMCA Swim Team and most recently competed at Santa Clara Futures after a strong showing at Mount Hood Speedo Sectionals. She notched a personal best in the mile at YMCA Nationals where she raced a total of four events.

Erwin also represented Boise High School during her first two years of high school. As a sophomore, she swam the 200 free at the Idaho State Championships and was the 500 free runner-up and took third in the 200 free during her rookie campaign.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Minnesota next fall! I chose Minnesota for the amazing coaches, team atmosphere and academic reputation. I can’t wait for my next four years as a Golden Gopher!”

Her best times include:

  • 500 free – 4:58.97
  • 1000 free – 10:17.50
  • 1650 free – 17:13.57
  • 100 fly – 58.96
