Michigan Women’s Division 2 State High School Championships

ROCHESTER, Michigan, December 4. FARMINGTON Hills Mercy outscored the second-place team by more than 100 points en route to taking the Michigan Women's Division 2 High School State Championship title.

Farmington Hills Mercy amassed a meet-high 346.5 points throughout the meet. Forest Hills Central took second with 216 points while Holland finished right behind with 214.5 points.

Seaholm's Lauren Nichols swept the sprint events, posting a Division 2 record in the 50 freestyle (23.41) and a 51.27 100 freestyle. Nichols' swim bettered the former record of 23.44 set by Hannah Smith of Dexter in 2004.

Liz Johnson of Milford corralled a Division 2 record as well. Johnson put up the top time in the 200 freestyle (1:49.63) that erased the former mark of 1:49.98 set by Adrienne Woods of Dexter in 2005. Johnson lost a hard-fought battle in the 100 backstroke at the hands of Holland's Emily Bos with a second place 56.07.

Bos' 100 backstroke swim in prelims set a Division 2 record. Her 55.21 preliminary swim trumped the former mark of 56.25 set by Dana Christ of Birmingham Groves in 2005. Bos also finished second in the 200 freestyle.

Karen Verbrugge of Forest Hills Central topped the diving competition with a 411.15 score. Zeeland's Ashley Borgman placed second (376.25) while Carolyn Wallace of Okemos took third (367.90).
