Michigan Upper Peninsula High School State Championships

MARQUETTE, Michigan, March 5. MARQUETTE walked away with two state titles at the Michigan Upper Peninsula High School State Championships. On the girls' side, Marquette tallied 323 points for first followed by Houghton (219) and Kingsford (183). Meanwhile, Marquette boys won with 316 points while Kingsford took second (253) and Sault Area placed third (198).

Girls Results
Houghton's Marissa Graff, Rebecca Jaszczak, Erin Ploe, and Danica Rozich (the 100 butterfly champ in 1:07.54) won the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:02.92. Ploe also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.91.

Rhonda Rossway had individual wins in the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle. She clocked times of 2:26.15 and 5:40.86, respectively.

Senior Claryce Porzondek (Kingsford) won the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.32. She combined with Michaela Newberry, Kaline Sturm and Emma Pontti for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.85).

Top finishers in the diving competition include Jamie Honkala (Westwood) (153.10), Danielle Reid (Manistique) (151.60), and Emily Aldrich (Manistique) (136.35).

Marquette's Tara Dowling was a dual event winner in the 200 (2:06.10) and 100 (57.92) freestyles. She teamed up with Linnea Eiben, Rossway and Alex Bott for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (4:01.66).

Boys Results
Andrew Mitchell, Nathan Winkler (the 100 breaststroke champ in 1:02.17), Steve Mulka, and Alex Thurston (Kingsford) set a meet record in the 200 medley relay (1:43.01). The previous record (1:44.36) was set by Marquette in 1992.

Mitchell was a dual event winner in the 100 butterfly (54.95) and 100 backstroke. He set a state record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.16. The previous record (55.76) was set by Houghton's Byron Shefcik in 1992.

Marquette's Wes Vear had individual wins in the 200 and 500 (5:00.00) freestyles. He set a state record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.62. The previous record (1:48.17) was set by Luke Barry (Sault Ste. Marie) in 2006.

Vear teamed up with James Gwinn, Dustin Cobb and Brad Cowan (the 200 IM champ in 2:03.46) for a win in the 200 freestyle relay. The boys set a state record with a time of 1:32.52. The previous record (1:33.83) was set by Kingsford in 2003.

Simon Dahlmann (Manistique) won the diving competition with a score of 188.50. Sam Maroste (Houghton) took second (177.20) and Dillon Mayer (Sault Area) placed third (176.80).

Vear, Cobb, Gwinn, and Cowan closed the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:24.58).
