Michigan Upper Peninsula High School State Championships

MARQUETTE, Michigan, March 1. AT the Michigan Upper Peninsula High School State Championships, the Marquette Senior girls and boys took home the state title with 306 and 330 points respectively. Houghton placed second (254) and Sault State Marie finished third (198) for the girls, while Kingsford placed second (321) and Sault State Marie finished third (214) for the boys.

Girls Results
Houghton’s Diana Radson, Laura Carroll, Danica Rozich, and Erin Ploe opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (2:02.99). Carroll also won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.09).

Tara Dowling (Marquette Senior) had individual wins in the 200 (2:04.92) and 100 (58.00) freestyles.

Senior Heather Cowan (Marquette Senior) won the diving competition (1:45.55), followed closely by Liz Naber (Houghton) with a score of 143.65 and Danielle Reid (Manistique) with a score of 132.20.

Rhonda Rossway of Marquette Senior won the 200 IM (2:24.31) and the 500 freestyle (5:34.80). She teamed up with Gabby Emerick, Alex Bott, and Dowling in the 200 freestyle relay for a first-place finishing time of 1:50.35.

Carroll, Kelci Donahue, Marissa Graff, and Rozich closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:58.51).

Boys Results
Alec Thurston, Nathan Winkler, Andrew Mitchell, and Taylor Sturm (Kingsford) won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.51. Winkler won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.52) and Mitchell won the 100 butterfly (57.59).

Sam Maroste (Houghton), Colton Rose (Marquette Senior), and Todd Daniels (Sault State Marie) were the top three finishers in the diving competition. They finished with scores of 154, 150.05, and 139.45 respectively.

Marquette Senior’s Wes Vear won the 200 (1:55.50) and the 100 (52.45) freestyles. He teamed up with juniors Caleb Fox, James Gwinn, and Brad Cowan for a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.14). Gwinn also won the 50 freestyle (23.61).

Fox, Dustin Cobb, Cowan, and Vear combined for a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:30.96). Cowan won the 200 IM (2:05.66) and the 100 backstroke (58.01) as well.
