NEW COMMIT: Burnaby, British Columbia’s Octavia Lau has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Michigan and will arrive in Ann Arbor this upcoming fall.

Primarily a freestyler, Lau swims year-round with Hyack Swim Club and represented Team Canada at the Junior Pan Pac Championships in five events. She earned the bronze in the 800m free at the 2018 Canadian Swimming Championships last April and was the runner-up in both the 400m/1500m frees at the Western Canadian Championships. Lau also competed for her home country at the 2018 FINA World Junior Open Water Championships in Eilat, Israel.

She told Swimming World:

“No words can describe how ecstatic I am to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Michigan’s swimming and diving program! Thank you to everyone who’s supported me, especially my home club Hyack for the past several years.? Looking forward to becoming a wolverine! GO BLUE!”

In LCM, her best times include:

  • 100m free – 57.59
  • 200m free – 2:02.69
  • 400m free – 4:18.08
  • 800m free – 8:48.42
  • 1500m free – 17:07.84

In SCY, those times convert to:

  • 100 free – 50.44
  • 200 free – 1:47.64
  • 500 free – 4:49.16
  • 1000 free – 9:52.06
  • 1650 free – 16:47.68

When she suits up for Michigan as a member of the class of 2023, Lau will join a talented freestyle group which will be led by Sierra Schmidt. Her best 200 free time (converted to yards) would’ve scored in the C-final at the 2018 Big Ten Championships.
