Michigan Lower Peninsula Girls High School State Championships

HOLLAND/ROCHESTER/YPSILANTI, Michigan, November 26. SALINE, Mercy, and East Grand Rapids walked away with state titles at the Michigan Lower Peninsula Girls High School State Championships. At the Division 1 meet, Saline tallied 244 points for first followed by Bloomfield Hills Marian (215) and West Ottawa (199). Mercy and Holland went head-to-head at the Division 2 meet. Mercy came out on top with 282 points while Holland took second (278) and Hudsonville placed third (220). East Grand Rapids dominated the Division 3 meet by scoring 416 points. Cranbrook Kingswood and Ann Arbor Skyline took second (234) and third (212) respectively.

Division 1 Results
West Ottawa's Colleen VandePoel, Shelby Lacy, Vickie Otto, and Amanda Teske won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.04. Lacy also set a meet record in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.59). The previous record (1:05.13) was set by Brynn Marecki (Stevenson) in 2007.

Sophomore Anna DeMonte (Ann Arbor Huron) had first-place finishes in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly (54.92). She set a meet record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.72. The previous record (2:03.23) was set last year by AA Pioneer's Valerie Barthelemy.

Hanna Cowley (Ann Arbor Pioneer) was a dual event winner in the 200 (1:51.75) and 100 (51.55) freestyles. She teamed up with Julia Lovejoy, Michaela Betts, and Paige Kostishak for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.08).

Bedford's Cheynne Cousineau won the diving competition with a score of 469.20. Ashley Hardy (Utica) and Carla McNamara (Livonia Stevenson) followed with scores of 432.50 and 399.70 respectively.

Kostishak, Molly Shanley, Mari Isa, and Cowley finished first in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:32.96.

Division 2 Results
Holland won two of three relays. Courtney Bartholomew, Melissa Vandermeulen, Emily Bos, and Kaler Northuis won the 200 medley relay (1:45.47). Bartholomew also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.75.

Amelia Marsh (Okemos) had individual wins in the 200 (1:50.55) and 500 (5:01.65) freestyles.

Forest Hills Central's Marissa Murphy set meet records in the 200 IM (2:04.74) and the 100 butterfly (56.41).

Farmington Hills Mercy won the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.99). Taylor Steffl, Nikki Barczak, Olivia Samoray, and Sato Kakihara contributed to the win.

Senior Emily Bos (Holland), who is a five-star recruit in the Swimming World College Recruit rankings powered by Take Your Marks, had first-place finishes in the 50 (23.10) and 100 freestyles. She set a meet record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.96. The previous record (50.83) was set last year by Seaholm's Lauren Nichols.

Holland's Paige Kortman set a meet record in the diving competition with a score of 441.80. The previous record (411.15) was set by Karen Verbrugge (Forest Hills Central) in 2007. Ally Golden (Portage Northern) and Emma Brown (Birmingham Groves) followed with cores of 396.95 and 382.85 respectively.

Nicole Cordero, Haley Thompson, Bartholomew, and Bos set a meet record in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:27.39.

Division 3 Results
Ally Bremer, Molly Lundquist, Karly Surman, and Allison Pall (East Grand Rapids) won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.09.

Junior Jayme Groth (Bloomfield Hills) was a dual event winner in the 50 (23.93) and 100 (52.18) freestyles.

Randi Brown of East Grand Rapids set a meet record in the diving competition with a score of 484.35. Katie Vulpetti (East Grand Rapids) and Lauren Dark (Chelsea) followed with scores of 420.75 and 410.70 respectively.

Milan's Heather Kiger took first in the 100 butterfly (57.93). She teamed up with Anna Hargrove, Emily Weber, and Lauren Cook for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.67).

Other event winners include Tiffany Oricchio (Haslett) in the 200 freestyle (1:54.91), Bronte' Stewart (Sturgis) in the 200 IM (2:09.67), Leigh Holmes (Alma) in the 500 freestyle (5:07.42), Marissa Blumenthal (Lahser) in the 100 backstroke (58.99), and Lexie Beemer (Ann Arbor Skyline) in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.71).

Miln Crawford, Molly Laubernds, Alexa Resetar, and Maeve McHugh (Cranbrook) won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:38.45.
