In an interview with The Strait TimesMichael Phelps showed his support for Joseph Schooling, the reigning Olympic Champion in the 100 fly, in the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Schooling memorably beat Phelps, his childhood idol, in that 100 fly in Rio de Janeiro nearly three years ago.

In the interview, Phelps said Schooling “is going to be fine” as long as he prepares himself accordingly heading into the Games. “He’s talented enough, he’s got enough speed, he’s got a great kick, he’s a great competitor,” said Phelps.
