Merve Tuncel Books Lane Four In Bid For Third Straight Clean Sweep at European Juniors

Merve Tuncel will bid for a third straight freestyle clean sweep from lane four after heading the 400 prelims on the final day of the European Juniors in Belgrade.

The Turkish swimmer has won the 400-800-1500 free treble at the 2021 and 2022 European Juniors and has already won the two longer distance titles in Belgrade.

Tuncel led the final prelims session in the Serbian capital in 4:13.09 ahead of Germany’s Maya Werner (4:14.66) and 2022 bronze medallist Nikolett Padar (4:15.84).

Vlad Stancu – the 2022 joint-silver medallist – headed the boys’ 400 prelim in 3:52.91 with the Romanian having already claimed two second places.

Filippo Bertoni will be alongside Stancu in lane five after qualifying in 3:53.80.

Spain heads the girls’ 4×100 medley relay into Sunday’s final in 4:08.39 but there’s no place for 2022 silver medallists Hungary.

Led off by Dora Molnar – who was ninth in the 100 back – the quartet missed out by one place in 4:12.79 and will be first reserves.

Molnar finishes the meet with three golds, one silver and one bronze.

Denmark heads the men’s field in 3:42.43 with defending champions Britain through in fifth.
