Men’s NCAA Div. I Championships: Michigan’s Davis Tarwater Repeats as 200 Fly Champ, Just Misses Stewart’s Record

By Phillip Whitten

ATLANTA, Georgia, March 25. MICHIGAN’S Davis Tarwater reprised his 2005 title in the 200 fly, holding off a determined challenge by Georgia’s Gil Stovall to win in 1:41.84, making him the third fastest performer all-time.

His time just missed breaking Mel Stewart’s NCAA mark of 1:41.78, dating from 1991.

Stovall touched in 1:42.10, making him the fourth fastest performer all-time.

Tarwater led the entire way, turning in 23.09, 48.57 (25.48), 1:14.70 (26.13) and 1:41.84 (27.14).

Auburn placed eighth, twelfth and fifteenth to add 18 points to its lead to 26 over Arizona, which did not have a 200 fly entry.

With the diving on tap, the Tigers were on the verge of clinching their fourth straight NCAA crown.
