Men’s NCAA Championships, Day 3 Prelims: Auburn Keeps on Rolling Toward a Second-Straight Title

By Phillip Whitten

EAST MEADOW, New York, March 27. WE’RE back at the Nassau County aquatic Center for the final day of the men’s NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

The team race has long since been decided, as Auburn takes nearly a 200-point lead into Day 3. There is a fierce battle for second, however, with Stanford leading Texas by a mere one-and-a-half points.

Auburn has 435 points. The record for most points at this meet is 632 and Auburn could do it, depending on how its three 1500 meter swimmers, three divers and 400 free relay team do.

Now on to the prelims…

200 meter backstroke
The 200 backstroke should belong to Texas sophomore Aaron Peirsol, who holds the American record for 200 yards and the world records for 200 meters short course and long course. He is the only male swimmer in any event to hold records in all three venues.

Peirsol turned in the top prelim time, an NCAA record 1:51.89, splitting 54.54 – 57.35. Also under the old mark was Stanford’s Markus Rogan at 1:52.56 .

Stanford put three men in the A final, Texas managed two in the A and one in the B final, while Auburn was one up and two down.

In a very fast prelim session, it took 1:55.07 to make the A final, 1:56.48 to make B.

Look for Peirsol to go for his own world record of 1:51.17 tonight.

100 meter freestyle
Defending champ Duje Draganja of Cal is the favorite in this event, but he faces stiff competition from the Auburn trio of Fred Bousquet, George Bovell, and Ryan Wochomurka.

In heat 8, Bovell out-touched Florida’s Carlos Jayme, 47.55 to 47.56, as both men bettered Anthony Ervin’s NCAA record of 47.63 from 2000. But the new mark did not last long asWochomurka lowered it to 47.38 in the final heat.

In all, five men swam 47s, with 48.18 needed to make the championship final and 48.63 to make consols. Eighteen swimmers broke 49 seconds. Bousquet qualified fifth, Ian Crocker fourth and Draganja will be in lane 1 tonight after qualifying seventh.

Among the top three teams, Auburn has three swimmers in the A final, one in B; Texas is one and one, while Stanford was shut out.

200 meter breaststroke
After this morning’s swim, Texas’ Brendan Hansen is one swim away from becoming the first man to win the 200 breaststroke all four years of his college career. He also is one race away from becoming the first man to take both breaststroke events all four years.

Hansen is in the driver’s seat, having qualified first this afternoon in 2:07.16, though this observer has seen him look better in the past.

Hansen’s only serious challenge may come from Wyoming’s Scott Usher, whose unorthodox stroke, with its elbows-on-the-surface-of the-water recovery is very distinctive. Usher clocked 2:07.96 – the only swimmer beside Hansen to break 2:09.

It took 2:0.10 to make A final, 2:12.23 to make B. Auburn is one up, one down, as is Stanford. Texas just has one up, but that one is Hansen.

200 meter butterfly
In heat 3, Stanford’s Jayme Cramer broke the NCAA mark of 1:55.79 set by Adam Messner in 2000, with his 1:55.49. that mark lasted until the next heat when Virginia’s Michael Raab went two-hundredths of a second faster Kentucky’s Daniel cruz was also under the old standard with his 1:55.68, as five men swam under 1:56.

Stanford has the team scoring advantage here with two swimmers in the A final, one in B. Texas is one-and one, while Auburn is represented by only one consols swimmer.

It took 1:56.16 to make the Big Final, 1:57.55 to make consols.

This race should boil down to a battle between Raab and Cramer.

400 meter freestyle relay
The final event of the meet shapes up as a battle among Stanford (qualified first), Auburn (6th), Arizona (5th ) and Cal ( 7th). Don’t count out Florida (2nd), Minnesota (3rd) or Texas A&M (4th) either, as only one second separated the top seven teams in prelims.

This should be a fitting finale tonight to a superb NCAA Championship meet.
