Megan Tomes Named SEC Swimmer of the Week

KNOXVILLE, Tenn, February 10. AFTER amassing a total of four event titles in a 151.5-147.5 edging of Ohio State on Sunday, Feb. 10, freshman Megan Tomes (Cincinnati, Ohio) was chosen as the Southeastern Conference Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday.

“We are really proud of her performances this past weekend,” Head Coach Dan Colella said. “She was instrumental in us winning the meet. It’s a well deserved compliment to what she did in the pool this past Sunday.”

The highly-touted newcomer becomes the first member of Colella’s squad to be a two-time winner of the conference weekly citation this year. Against the Buckeyes, Tomes posted an NCAA provisional time in the 200y freestyle with an event-crown 1:50.35. She was also a member of both relay-winning squads in the 200y medley relay and 400y freestyle relay. She swam the first leg of the team that notched a new Mike Peppe Aquatic Center standard in the 200y medley relay and served as the anchor for the event-winning 400y freestyle relay squad. Additionally, Tomes became the 14th-fastest Lady Vol in school history with a 4:54.41 in the 500y freestyle to win that title as well. Tomes’ four titles for the Lady Vols brought her overall season total to 28 crowns. Overall, she accounted for 40 points, which was 27 percent of the team total against Ohio State.
