PHOENIX, Arizona, October 14. A tradition continued Monday evening as junior nationals runner-up Matt Anderson made a verbal commitment to attend Stanford University next fall.

Anderson carries on Mike Maczuga’s legacy of sending swimmers to Stanford for nearly 15 years from the Arizona Marlins. Becky Crowe was Maczuga’s first swimmer to join the Cardinal swim team in 1990, followed by her two brothers. Currently, Chris Pickard is in the midst of his senior year as the most current Stanford swimmer with ties to Maczuga. After more than 30 years in existence, the Marlins are merging with Phoenix Swim Club.

Anderson had a breakout summer at the long course junior nationals, placing second in the 200 breast with a 2:16.71 after leading for the first 100 meters. That represented a 1.5-second drop in his lifetime best in the event. He was third in the C final of the 100 breast with a 1:03.76. He’s also a strong IMer, with long course personal bests of 2:07.90 in the 200 IM and 4:32.21 in the 400 IM.

Anderson’s short course yards times are bound to catch up to his long course swims soon. He posted a 54.69 in the 100 breast last March and a 1:57.45 in the 200 breast for his current lifetime bests. He’ll be part of a talented breaststroke group in Palo Alto, with Charlie Wiser and Curtis Ogren among those he’ll train with daily.

Marlins-Stanford: there have been several other members of that “club,” with possibly one of the more consequential being Justin Ewers, who during his stay on The Farm moved into the Stanford all-time top 10 in both backstrokes and the 50 free and in 1998 was part of a Stanford team crown and a winning, American record setting 4×50 free relay. And in keeping with the sibling theme started by the Crowes, Justin’s sister Maren was part of the Stanford squad as well.

I believe there has been 12 swimmers from the AZ Marlins that ended up swimming at Stanford.
