BOSTON, Massachusetts, March 12. WESTON won the team title and set two state relay records at the Massachusetts Men's Division 2 High School Championships.
Weston's 217 points proved to be enough to win the team championship. Ipswich and Bishop Feehan fought for the second-place spot, and Ipswich came out on top with a 117-point total. Bishop Feehan settled for third with 114 points.
Weston's 200 medley relay team of Stuart Butts, Michael Grant, Chris Rossborough and Graham Frankel kicked off the meet with a 1:34.07 win, overtaking the former state record of 1:35.84, which Weston set last year. Butts, Rossborough, Graham and Frankel erased the second relay record of the meet, clocking a 3:08.45. Weston set the previous standard of 3:10.16 in 2005.
Those four man unleashed havoc upon the competition, as each of them won at least one individual event.
Frankel was a double event winner in the sprint events. He crushed the former state record in the 50 freestyle with a preliminary time of 20.77. David Cuttino of Melrose clocked the former standard of 21.31 in 1991. Frankel went on to win in finals with a 20.96. In the 100 freestyle, Frankel again wiped out a state standard. His 45.66 swim in the preliminary heats trumped the former record of 46.97, which Cuttino also set in 1991.
Butts captured wins in both the 200 IM (1:54.12) and the 100 backstroke (52.15). Butts is a Swimming World two-star recruit who will head off to the University of Maryland next season.
Joey Sbordon from Bishop Feehan was the only non-Weston swimmer to win a swimming individual event, clocking first-place times in the 200 freestyle (1:44.20) and the 500 freestyle (4:42.83).
Brendan Cavallaro from Middleboro mined gold in the diving competition, winning with a 558.15 score. Stewart Bird of Concord Carlisle finished up in second with a 480.95 score while Wayland's Patrick Rogers snatched up third place (465.55)
