Martina Grimaldi Victorious in Tight 25K at European Open Water Champs
The final day at the 2016 European Open Water Championships featured the mixed 25K. This was the longest distance after Sunday’s 10K, Tuesday’s 5K, and Wednesday’s Team 5K.
After a nearly five and a half hour race, the women’s top three finishers were less than three seconds apart, with another two swimmers just seven more seconds behind. Gold went to Martina Grimaldi of Italy in 5:26:47.8. Olga Kozydub of Russia claimed silver in 5:26:49.8. France’s Caroline Jouisse took home bronze with a final time of 5:26:50.5.

Axel Reymond of France was the fastest finisher of the day, grabbing gold in the men’s event with a 5:02:22.0. Italians completed the men’s podium. Matteo Furlan was almost four minutes behind in 5:06:07.5. Another three minutes back was Edoardo Stochino who swam through the finish line in 5:09:19.4.
