Maine Men’s Class B High School State Championships

BRUNSWICK, Maine, March 4. JUSTIN Gilmartin led the Mount Desert Island men to their fifth consecutive Maine Class B High School Championship, setting two meet records in each of his gold-medal swims.
Mount Desert Island led the way with 381.5 points, defeating Greely out for the top spot by 28.5 points (353). John Bapst Memorial trailed well behind in third with 173 points.
Gilmartin pulled out a 52.14 100 butterfly, erasing Old Town's David Martinez's 2006 meet record of 52.75. Later on the meet, Gilmartin shaved down the former meet record in the 100 backstroke with a 53.36 time. Gilmartin's swim erased former University of Maine standout Derek Marshall's 1988 record of 53.93.
Brian Batson from Ellsworth roped in two individual event wins with times of 1:46.84 and 48.65 in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle, respectively.
Nathan Mecray of Greely cracked two elusive barriers in each of his event wins. Mecray clocked a 59.99 in his 100 breaststroke, breaking the one-minute barrier, and a 21.89 in his 50 freestyle, breaking the 22-second barrier.
Tyler Bowen from Belfast Area rounded out the double event winners. Bowen took first in the 200 IM (1:58.94) and the 500 freestyle (4:48.60).
Ryan Criner from Orono was the sole diver to successfully place and took home the gold medal with a 176.55 score.
