Madeleine Vonderhaar of Notre Dame Academy (Covington, KY) and the Northern Kentucky Clippers has announced her verbal commitment to swim for the University of Virginia in the fall of 2016. Vonderhaar, a breaststroke specialist, selected the Cavaliers after considering a number of top tier swimming programs including Arizona and Duke.

Vonderhaar’s achievements include an Olympic Trial cut in the 200-meter breast and two third-place finishes in the 200-meter IM and 100-meter breast at the 2015 Kentucky High School State Championship. She has big meet experience at USA Junior and Senior Nationals, which should translate well to the high levels of competition in the ACC.

Based on Virginia’s 2014-2015 top times, Vonderhaar joins Coach Augie Busch‘s squad as the third-fastest 100 and 200-yard breaststroker.

Clippers head coach Norm Wright believes Vonderhaar brings more than just swimming talent to Virgina. “Maddie is a natural leader,” Wright said. “She has intangible qualities that will make her a great addition to the UVA team.”

Vonderhaar isn’t the first Northern Kentucky Clipper connection in Charlottesville. Former Clipper Ellen Williamson graduated from the program this past semester and UVA assistant coach and former NCAA Champion Cory Chitwood swam for the Clippers.

The Virginia women finished fifth at the 2015 NCAA Championships and are the reigning ACC Champions.
