Lydia Jacoby Crushes 17-18 National Age Group Record in 200 Breast at Big 12 Champs, Moves Into All-Time Top-10

During the final night of the Big 12 Championships, Texas freshman Lydia Jacoby clobbered the 17-18 National Age Group record in the 200 breaststroke. In a duel with Texas teammate Anna Elendt, Jacoby led narrowly at each intermediate split, but Elendt was closing the gap, trailing by only seven hundredths with 50 yards to go. But then, Jacoby fired the afterburners and finished in 32.11, over a second quicker than Elendt, and she hit the wall in 2:04.32.

That time broke the 17-18 NAG of 2:05.68 previously held by Ella Nelson and moved Jacoby into the all-time top-10 in the event. In the process, Jacoby dropped two seconds from her previous lifetime best of 2:06.66, which she set only last month at a dual meet against NC State. As for this college season, Jacoby is the third-ranked 200 breaststroker in the country behind Virginia teammates Kate Douglass and Alex Walsh, although Walsh is unlikely to race this event at the NCAA Championships next month.

Meanwhile, Elendt finished second in 2:05.50, about one-and-a-half seconds behind her own best time (2:03.92) but good for No. 6 in the country behind Douglass, Walsh, Jacoby, Tennessee’s Mona McSharry and Georgia’s Zoie Hartman. Another Longhorn, Channing Hanley, placed third in 2:09.32.
