Big 12 Championships, Day 4 Finals: Olivia Bray, Erica Sullivan, David Johnston Post Big Swims as Texas Clinches Titles

As expected, the winning streaks for the Texas women and men continued at the Big 12 Championships, with the Longhorn men winning a 27th consecutive conference title and the women an 11th straight. On the final night of the meet, Texas swimmers continued to post strong performances to set themselves up for next month’s NCAA Championships.

The first final of the evening saw Olivia Bray win her second event of the meet while posting the third-quickest time in the country in the women’s 200 backstroke while Carson Foster won his third title in the men’s 200 back while improving to No. 4 in the nation. Kelly Pash also won her third individual event of the meet as she topped the women’s 100 freestyle.

Later on in the session, Erica Sullivan and David Johnston each posted third-ranked times in the country in their respective 1650 freestyle races while Lydia Jacoby swam the third-fastest time nationally while crushing the 17-18 National Age Group record in the 200 breaststroke.

Women’s Platform Diving

It was a sweep for Texas on the platform to begin the final night, with Janie Boyle scoring 363.10 points to take the win. Teammates Jordan Skilken (322.36) and Sarah Carruthers (308.25) rounded out the top three.

Women’s 200 Backstroke

Only two swimmers have cracked 1:50 in the 200 back so far this season, but Olivia Bray came within a tenth of joining those ranks in a dominant victory in the opening race of the last session. Bray, who was up on the field by more than 3.5 seconds at the halfway point before winning the conference title by 7.7 seconds, touched in 1:50.09, breaking the Big 12 meet record she set last year and falling just short of the conference record of 1:49.91 set by Tasija Karosas in 2017.

In an event loaded with talent on the national level, including 200-meter back World Championship medalists Phoebe Bacon and Rhyan White, Bray now ranks second in the country, her time edging out Tennessee’s Josephine Fuller (1:50.12) while sitting behind only Stanford’s Claire Curzan (1:47.43) and Cal’s Isabelle Stadden (1:48.75).

In the race for second, Dewi Blose finished well to take second in 1:57.79, just ahead of Iowa State’s Liz Richardson (1:57.97). Also under 2:00 were Kansas’ Lezli Sisung (1:59.35) and West Virginia’s Paige Dressel (1:59.59).

Men’s 200 Backstroke

Carson Foster, the runnerup in the 200 backstroke at last year’s NCAA Championships, dominated the event at the Big 12 meet. Leading by over a second at the 100-yard mark, his final margin of victory was a whopping 2.61 seconds over Texas teammate Ethan Harder, and his time of 1:38.87 put him at No. 4 in the national rankings behind the 1:38.22 that Brendan Burns swam earlier in the night at the Big Ten Championships as well as Cal’s Destin Lasco and Georgia’s Ian Grum.

Harder finished second in 1:41.48, so he will rely on his prelims time of 1:40.79 to try to earn a spot at next month’s NCAA Championships, while West Virginia’s Justin Heimes placed third in 1:43.84.

Women’s 100 Freestyle

Kelly Pash has been the top women’s performer this week, and she finished off her individual slate of events with a win in the 100 free, eschewing her traditional spot in the 200 fly to race this event at the conference level. Pash finished in 47.68 to beat teammate Ava Longi by eight tenths, and the Longhorns ended up occupying the top four spots in the race. Longi finished in 48.47, ahead of Kyla Leibel (48.79) and Bridget Semenuk (48.89).

Men’s 100 Freestyle

Danny Krueger won the men’s 100 free in the final individual race of his career at the Big 12 meet, overcoming the early lead of Texas teammate Peter Larson to win by a half-second in 42.12. Although Krueger will need to swim much faster at the NCAA Championships next month to repeat his 2022 A-final performance last year (or even to score), his reliability and consistency in the 100 free is one aspect Texas can count on heading to Minneapolis for both individual swims and relays.

Larson took second in 42.61, holding off Luke Hobson (42.62) by one hundredth. West Virginia’s Conner McBeth placed fourth in 43.34, but the third-fastest time of the night belonged to Texas sophomore Kobe Ndebele, racing exhibition at the meet, who swam a 43.10 in the B-final.

Women’s 1650 Freestyle

Last season, Erica Sullivan attempted to win the NCAA title in the 1650 free out of an afternoon heat after arriving at the national championships without a top-eight entry time. That won’t be a problem in 2023 after Sullivan clocked the third-fastest time in the country to win her conference title Saturday evening. Sullivan built an early lead before accelerating around the 500-yard mark, moving from 29.2 splits to the 28-mid range for the bulk of the race. The splits crept closer to 28-high and even 29-low territory, but she had enough to close in 27.88 and record a sub-15:50 swim.

Sullivan finished in 15:49.16, which ranks behind defending NCAA champion Paige McKenna of Wisconsin (15:46.90) and Kensey McMahon of Alabama (15:47.02) in the national rankings. Sullivan just missed Evie Pfeifer’s 2021 meet record of 15:48.65. Sullivan’s lifetime best in the event sits at 15:23.81, a 2019 swim which ranks her second all-time behind Katie Ledecky.

Sullivan won this race by 20 seconds while a pair of her Texas teammates rounded out the top three: Abby Pfeifer (16:09.67) and Olivia McMurray (16:19.62).

Men’s 200 Breaststroke

Caspar Corbeau went wire-to-wire in the 200 breast final while leading a Texas sweep of the top-five spots. Corbeau, a finalist in the 200-meter breast at last summer’s World Championships, swam a time of 1:51.92 to take the win by one-and-a-half seconds, his time good for 11th in the national rankings so far this season with surely more room to drop for the NCAA Championships.

Corbeau was followed by teammate Braden Vines, who placed second in 1:53.48, and Jake Foster, who was third in 1:53.61. Paul DeGrado (1:55.96) and Will Chan (1:56.44) occupied the next two spots for Texas.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Texas already owns the top three times in the country in the women’s 200 fly with Emma SticklenKelly Pash and Dakota Luther, and even though Pash skipped the 200 fly Saturday, Sticklen and Luther took care of business for the Longhorns. Luther led for most of the race, but she faded on the last 50 while Sticklen powered through to win in 1:52.11, seven tenths off her top-ranked season best of 1:51.37. Luther, who has been as fast as 1:51.58 this year, took second in 1:52.71. The rest of the field finished well behind the top two, with West Virginia’s Mia Walters took third in 2:00.82.

The last diving event of the meet went to Texas’ Noah Duperre with 392.30 points, good enough to narrowly beat out TCU’s Alec Hubbard (391.05). Another Horned Frogs diver, Ollie Cazaly, took third (328.55).

Women’s 400 Freestyle Relay

The Texas women cruised to an eight-second win in the 400 free relay, with Kelly Pash (47.62), Olivia Bray (47.29), Ava Longi (47.93) and Kyla Leibel (48.45) combining for a mark of 3:11.29. The Longhorns slightly improved upon their previous season-best mark while remaining eighth in the national rankings.

TCU’s Serena GouldEmma HultquistLucia Simovicova and Olivia Rhodes took second in 3:19.36,and third went to West Virginia’s Mia CheatwoodAbby ReardonAda Szwabinska and Jaqueline McCutchan in 3:20.24.

Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay

The Longhorn men concluded the meet with an easy win in the 400 free relay, with Danny KruegerPeter LarsonLuke Hobson and Carson Foster finishing in 2:49.26. However, Texas finished just off its season-best time of 2:49.15, which ranks 10th in the country. That means Texas will not race in the top heat of the 400 free relay at the NCAA Championships, just like in three of the other four relays on the program, so it will depend on the Longhorns improving their times by significant margins in order to continue a streak of top-two finishes at the meet dating back to 2014.

The top split on the Texas relay was Larson’s 42.15 while Krueger led off in 42.25. Meanwhile, Caspar Corbeau anchored the Texas B-relay in 42.08, so it would not be surprising if he ends up on the top squad at NCAAs next month.

West Virginia’s Danny BerlitzBraden OsbornRoanoke Shirk and Conner McBeth finished second in 2:54.77, and TCU’s Milan FabianDusan BabicJadon Wuilliez and Parker Hughes took third in 2:55.69.
