Big 12 Championships, Day 2 Finals: Erica Sullivan, Carson Foster Post Nationally-Ranked Times as Texas Cruises

During the first full evening of racing at the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas, the Longhorns continued to post some solid times that stack up well against their national competition despite a lack of top-notch competition at the conference meet. In particular, Erica Sullivan swam a strong 500 free time that is just off her top-ranked national time while Carson Foster dominated the men’s 200 IM. Texas won all individual events on the schedule, with David JohnstonKelly PashGrace Cooper and Danny Krueger all securing first-place finishes.

Women’s 500 Freestyle

Erica Sullivan of the Longhorns already owns the quickest time in the country in the 500 free at 4:35.88, a mark achieved at last month’s dual meet between Texas and NC State, and she swam within a second of that mark Thursday evening as she fended off a challenge from teammate Olivia Bray, better known for her abilities in the sprint backstroke and butterfly races but making a rare appearance in the 20-lap race.

Sullivan, the third-place finisher in the event at the NCAA Championships last year, finished in 4:35.88, a mark only she and sisters Rachel Stege (Georgia) and Kristen Stege (Tennessee) have surpassed this season, while Bray clocked 4:37.31 to move to fourth in the country. Meanwhile, Texas’ Abby Pfeifer held off teammate Jordan Edwards for third, 4:44.47 to 4:44.69.

Men’s 500 Freestyle

The 500 free could be a huge event for Texas at next month’s NCAA Championships, with Luke Hobson and David Johnston both returning after qualifying for the national A-final last year and Coby Carrozza back after a 2022 B-final appearance, and in this one, Johnston moved himself into the top-10 in the country with his time of 4:12.82. Johnston moved just ahead of Hobson at the 350-yard mark, and he pulled away to win in 4:12.82.

Carrozza also finished well, making up a deficit of more than a second to overtake Hobson during the final 100 yards of the race. Carrozza placed second in 4:14.12, just ahead of Hobson’s 4:14.27.

Pash touched in 1:53.94, marginally off her season-best time of 1:53.81 that ranks sixth in the country. Pash placed fifth in the event at last season’s NCAA Championships. Meanwhile, Sticklen placed second in 1:57.88 while Luther held off Iowa State’s Lucia Rizzo, 1:59.50 to 1:59.73.

Men’s 200 IM

It was a Texas 1-2-3-4 finish in the 200 IM and a Foster 1-2 finish as Carson Foster blasted a time of 1:40.42 for the win while older brother Jake Foster took second in 1:42.50. Carson’s time made him the second-fastest man in the country this season behind only Arizona State’s Leon Marchand and NC State’s Arsenio Bustos. Before winning silver medals behind Marchand in both long course individual medley events at the World Championships, Foster placed sixth in the 200-yard IM at the 2022 NCAA Championships, so he will be aiming for a much-improved result and his first-ever sub-1:40 swim next month.

Meanwhile, Jake Foster placed second in 1:42.50, good for 11th in the country, while the Longhorns’ Braden Vines (1:43.47) and Caspar Corbeau (1:44.46) placed third and fourth, respectively.

Texas’ Grace Cooper won the women’s 50 free by two tenths, touching in 22.29. She has posted a time as quick as 21.89 this season, which is tied for 18th in the country, and she split a swift 21.31 anchoring the Longhorns’ 200 medley relay Wednesday night. Ava Longi placed second for Texas in 22.49, just ahead of teammates Kyla Leibel (22.62) and Bridget Semenuk (22.66).

Men’s 50 Freestyle

Danny Krueger touched out Texas teammate Peter Larson to win the men’s splash-and-dash, 19.48 to 19.59, while Will Chan went 19.68 for third, and freshman Charlie Crosby took fourth (19.71). Krueger, more known for his abilities in the 100 free, is playing a bigger-than-usual role for Texas this season as a fifth-year senior, and he has produced 18-second anchor splits as recently as Wednesday’s 200 medley relay.

Looking ahead to the Texas 200 free relay, Caspar Corbeau is likely to join Krueger and Larson on the squad, but Texas is still reeling from the losses of Drew Kibler and Cameron Auchinachie from last year’s squad.

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

In another win for Texas, the team of Olivia BrayAnna ElendtEmma Sticklen and Kelly Pash swam a time of 3:26.42 400 medley relay. Bray led off in 51.42, followed by Elendt’s 57.16 breaststroke split and Sticklen’s 50.76 on fly before Pash came home in 47.08. Only three teams have beaten that mark so far this season: the NCAA-record-setting group from Virginia along with the Longhorns themselves and NC State. This group posted a time of 3:25.29 last month, a mark that will likely send Texas to the NCAA Championships seeded second in this relay.

TCU finished second here in 3:37.97, more than 11.5 seconds behind the Longhorns, with Rylee MooreClaire ChahbandourJeanne Dahmen and Olivia Rhodes competing for the Horned Frogs. West Virginia’s Jaqueline McCutchanMia CheatwoodHarna Minezawa and Ada Szwabinska placed third in 3:39.10.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay

In the final event of the night, Texas completed an undefeated day of racing, but the Longhorns’ time in the 400 medley relay guaranteed they will not race in the final heat of the event at the NCAA Championships. The second-quickest heat is not a terrible place from which to swim — indeed, Cal won the national title in this event from the second-to-last heat in 2022 — but not ideal nonetheless. The Texas team of Carson FosterCaspar CorbeauSam Artmann and Danny Krueger combined for a time of 3:04.57, which moves Texas to 13th in the country.

Despite breaststroke standout Corbeau moving to butterfly for the Longhorns’ 200 medley relay, he remained in his signature stroke here while Sam Artmann handled fly, but Thursday night’s results did not produce any status-changing swims for Texas.

The second-quickest time of the night belonged to the Texas B-squad, with Ethan HarderWill ChanCole Crane and Peter Larson finishing in 3:05.49. Chan went 51.44 on breaststroke, just off Corbeau’s top split of 51.37, while Crane (45.89) and Larson (41.89) were just behind the splits from the A-team.

TCU’s team of Edgar CianciJadon WuilliezPiotr Sadlowski and Milan Fabien took second in 3:09.67, and third went to West Virginia’s Justin HeimesDanny BerlitzDavid Snider and Conner McBeth (3:11.67).
