This week’s Performance Of The Week, sponsored by LumaLanes, goes to Australian Kyle Chalmers, who broke the junior world record in the short course meter 100 freestyle at the Singapore stop of the 2016 FINA World Cup this week.

At just eighteen years old, Chalmers is already an Olympic gold medalist in the 100 freestyle and the junior world record holder in the long course version of the event. Touching in 46.61 in Singapore, Chalmers continued to establish his legacy as the future of sprint freestyle by breaking the existing standard for the junior world record. Prior to the Aussie’s performance, the record had no name attached. FINA had set benchmark times when they established the junior world record system, which put no name next to the record until those benchmarks were surpassed.

Chalmers’ new junior world record was only good enough to get second in that event behind Vladimir Morozov, the current world cup leader this year. Chalmers did nab his first world cup gold medal in the 200 freestyle, touching in 1:42.67 to narrowly miss the junior world record in that event. The record currently stands at 1:41.95, and Chalmers will have two more chances to put his name in the record books again at the last two stops of the 2016 FINA World Cup this week.

Congratulations Kyle Chalmers on earning Swimming World’s Performance of the Week!

NOTE: at the time of this article being published, Chalmers surpassed the record once again at the Tokyo stop of the FINA World Cup, touching in 46.12 to break his four day old record.

Special Thanks to LumaLanes for sponsoring Swimming World’s Performance of the Week.
