Lucky Number 24: Salesianum Men Claim 24th Delaware State Championship

NEWARK, Delaware, April 4. SALESIANUM School's swim team chalked up its 24th state championship in school history after winning Delaware's men's state championship.

Salesianum compiled 397 points throughout the course of the meet. Charter finished second with 296 points while Newark took the third spot with 229 points.

Salesianum kicked off the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Chris Konen, Josh Hyman, Dorsey Terry and Chris Barrett finished with a 1:39.81 time. The 400 medley relay contingent of Joe Bailey, Dan Feeney, Hyman and Bobby MacLeish improved upon its morning swim with a first-place time in the championship final of 3:18.16.

P.J. Koppel from Archmere snagged a first-place finish and a state record in the 200 IM with a 1:52.49 performance. Dane Grenda of Salesianum held the former mark of 1:53.55 set in 2004. Hyman had a slightly better 100 breaststroke swim, forcing Grenda to settle for second with a respectable time of 58.11.

Newark's Scott Shinton pulled out two championship finishes in his 100 butterfly (51.71) and the 500 freestyle (4:48.31).

Mike Moyer of Salesianum contributed to his team's winning ways with a first-place diving score of 338.25. A.I. du Pont's Ben Legere scored 331.85 points and finished second while Moyer's teammate, Jacob Zingaro, finished third with 312.00 points.
