Louisiana 5A State High School Championships

SULPHUR, Louisiana, November 30. JOHN Tortorich of Jesuit set two state records at the Louisiana 5A State Championships, the largest and fastest of the four state swimming championships.

Men's Individual Results

Tortorich slid under the former 50 freestyle standard by .02, clocking a first-place time of 20.67. Jesuit's Alton Smith, a former USC swimmer, set the former standard of 20.69 back in 2002. Turtorich continued his assault on the competition with a scorching 49.63 in his 100 butterfly. He erased a 26-year-old record in the process, as Brian Zielinski of Catholic set the former mark of 49.95 in 1981.

Jesuit's Brian Carr notched individual event wins in the longer-distance freestyle events. He took first in both the 200 freestyle (1:44.24) and the 500 freestyle (4:43.05).

Jesuit used its top-notch talent to clean up all three relay event golds. The 200 medley relay consisting of Marc Dorsey, Tortorich, Jared Rodrigue and Mark Reuther touched first in a 1:38.86 time. Dorsey, Ramsey Burch, Reuther and Tortorich annihilated the 200 freestyle relay field, clocking a 1:28.57. Jesuit's foursome of Carr, Chris Willem, Burch and Rodrigue closed out the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in a 3:19.45 time.

Women's Individual Results

Northshore's relays all reigned supreme, as the Panthers went three-for-three in the relay events. The 200 medley relay team of Heather Winn, Alyssa Bodin, Annie Holladay and Colleen Donovan put together a 1:52.65 performance, winning the first Panther gold of the meet. Maria Reyes overtook St. Joseph's Academy's second swimmer in the 200 freestyle relay, and Northshore never looked back, as the Panther relay (Jessica Joyce, Reyes, Katie Bergerud and Bodin) remained in first for the rest of the race and finished in 1:42.84. Winn, Bergerud, Holladay and Donovan ended the meet the way it started off by the medley relay team, clocking a 3:40.67 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Donovan nabbed two wins in addition to her relay successes. She led for each 50 of the 200 IM, taking the event in a 2:09.77. Donovan's second individual win came in the form of a one-second margin of victory in the 100 freestyle (53.96).

Joanne Chien of Baton Rouge picked up two gold medals and one Class 5A record. Chien bested the field in the 50 freestyle (24.69) before swimming the 100 backstroke in a record time of 58.48. Her time erased the former 5A standard of 58.61 set by Morgan McGee of Caddo Magnet in 2005.

Team Scores

The Jesuit men took home the 5A team title, scoring 358 points. Catholic placed second with 291 points while Northshore took third with 146 points.

Mt. Carmel took the team title over Northshore in the women's competition by a score of 327-310 despite the Panthers' success in the relay events. St. Joseph's Academy placed third (236).
