Leon Marchand Headlines Contenders for World Record in 200 Breaststroke
There wasn’t an expectation of a world record during the first quarter of 2026, but Cam McEvoy had other plans when he attended the China Open last month in Shenzhen. Fulfilling a longtime goal, the Australian veteran ripped a performance of 20.88 in the 50-meter freestyle to take down Cesar Cielo’s 16-year-old mark of 20.91. What event might be next for a record rewrite?
The top-three performers in the history of the 200-meter breaststroke are active, while a pair of teenagers have shown considerable promise on the path to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. So, the 200 breast is a logical event to highlight as a discipline ripe for a world record. The current global standard sits at 2:05.48, established by China’s Qin Haiyang at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka.
Here’s a glance at five contenders to set a world record in the 200 breaststroke.
Qin Haiyang
This list begins with the world-record holder, although Qin has not come close to his global standard since he set it more than two years ago. Unable to crack the podium in an individual event at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Qin claimed a pair of world titles last summer in Singapore, including in the 200 breaststroke. His time en route to that gold medal was 2:07.41, so work remains for the Chinese star to threaten his best.
The positive for the 26-year-old is that his primary competition for 2026 is the Asian Games, a meet that routinely produces elite performances. Could it be that the regional event does not feature the same pressure as the Olympics or World Champs? It’s a valid argument, and perhaps Qin will unleash in Tokyo. If nothing else, he is the only athlete in history to go sub-2:05.50, and the knowledge he has gone that fast previously could be beneficial.
Leon Marchand
When Leon Marchand surged to the 2024 Olympic title in the 200 breaststroke, he delighted the home crowd at La Defense Arena. More, his effort of 2:05.85 set a European record and made the Frenchman the No. 2 performer of all-time. Marchand opted out of the 200 breast at last summer’s World Champs, instead choosing to focus on the individual medley events. If he returns to the 200 breaststroke this summer, Marchand can be considered the favorite for the world record, simply given his pedigree and upside.
What could keep Marchand from challenging the world record in the 200 breaststroke? His schedule. Only Marchand and coach Bob Bowman know what the 23-year-old will contest at this summer’s European Championships and the potential of racing an “off” event could keep the 200 breast off his program. If Marchand decides to attack the 200 breast, the fact that he’s already been within a half-second of the world record clearly puts him within striking distance.
Zac Stubblety-Cook
Australia’s Zac Stubblety-Cook was the Olympic champion in the 200 breaststroke at the Tokyo Games and followed with a silver medal in Paris. The first man to break the 2:06 barrier in the event, thanks to a swim of 2:05.95 in 2022, the Aussie will have the Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships to target this summer, both meets providing Stubblety-Cook with the chance to battle elite opposition.
Two questions linger around Stubblety-Cook’s ability to chase the world record. For one, the veteran is now three-plus years removed from visiting 2:05 territory. Additionally, a back injury forced Stubblety-Cook to miss last summer’s World Championships, and how an athlete will return from physical woes is always a question.
Shin Ohashi
At just 17 years old and already highly decorated in the breaststroke events, Japan’s Shin Ohashi figures to be the future of the stroke. As he maintains his country’s rich tradition in the breaststroke events, Ohashi recently registered a personal best and set a world junior record of 2:06.59 in the 200 breaststroke at the Japan Swim. That time, his third trip under 2:07, makes the teenager the No. 7 performer in history.
When Ohashi first emerged on the international scene, his endurance was a defining characteristic. Over time, his speed has developed, providing the youngster with a dangerous skill set. Ohashi will have a pair of major meets where he can take aim at a 2:05 outing in the breaststroke, as he has been named to the Japanese squad for both the Pan Pacific Championships and Asian Games.
Filip Nowacki
Last year served as a major breakthrough campaign for Filip Nowacki, as the British teenager captured gold medals in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events at the World Junior Championships and European Junior Champs. At World Juniors, Nowacki’s victory in the 200 breaststroke arrived over Japan’s Shin Ohashi, his fellow rising star in the stroke.
The 18-year-old Nowacki owns a best time of 2:07.32 in the 200 breaststroke, so a large chunk of time must be dropped to challenge the world record. Still, Nowacki has show sharp improvement over the past year and, given his youth, sizable drops are likely to come.
