Leigh Lopez-Silvers, Sofia Bormett Set to Join The Herd After Verbally Committing to Marshall

NEW COMMIT: University Place, Wash. native Leigh Lopez-Silvers and Sofia Bormett of Stoughton, Wis. have both announced their verbal commitment to Marshall University beginning in the fall of 2021.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I’m very excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Marshall University! Thank you to my family, coaches, and friends for getting me to where I am today, I couldn’t have done it without you. Go Herd!”

Primarily a sprint freestyler, Bormett swims year-round with McFarland Spartan Sharks and finished fifth in the 200 free at the Wisconsin 13&O Championships in March where she also achieved four lifetime bests. She raced to ninth in the 100m free and 13th in the 200m free last long course season at the Wisconsin LCM Championships as well.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 24.57
  • 100 free – 52.28
  • 200 free – 1:51.92
  • 500 free – 5:11.94

Also competing for Stoughton High School, Bormett is a six-time Wisconsin DII State Championship finalist. She placed fourth in the 200 free and seventh in the 100 free during her junior campaign while taking first and third, respectively, in those events as a sophomore.

She told Swimming World:

“I love the coaches and the campus is exactly what I was looking for. Every interaction I’ve had with the swimmers and coaches has been nothing but good.Go Herd!”

A talented freestyler and IMer, Lopez-Silvers does her club swimming with University Place Aquatics Club and had four top-20 finishes at the Washington Open in January after placing fourth in the 50 fly and sixth in the 200 fly at Pacific Northwest Seniors in December. Last summer, she raced six events at Mount Hood Futures.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.99
  • 100 free – 51.35
  • 200 free – 1:51.16
  • 50 fly – 25.15
  • 100 fly – 55.66
  • 200 fly – 2:03.88

A current senior at Curtis High School, Lopez-Silvers is a six-time Washington 4A State Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American was the runner-up in both the 100 fly and 200 free as a junior while taking seventh and fourth, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.
