NEW COMMIT: Sophia Poeta from Berwyn, Penn. has announced her verbal commitment to Lehigh University for the fall of 2019. She will join Danielle Prekop as a member of the class of 2023.

Poeta swims year-round for the Upper Main Line Swim Team and is a member of her club’s National Team where she has achieved two Winter Juniors standards. She finished a strong summer season with four lifetime bests at the YMCA LCM National Championships, placing sixth in the 100m back (1:05.05), seventh in the 50m back (30.84) and eighth in the 50m free (27.25). She swam her best 100m back time at the TYR Pro Swim Series – Columbus and competed at YMCA SCY Nationals in April.

Poeta is a senior at Conestoga High School where she swims back and free and is a member of the school-record holding 4×50 medley relay, 4×50 free relay and 4×100 free relay squads. A three-time State qualifier, Poeta place second in the 100 back at the PIAA 3A District I Championships. She then went on to the 3A State Meet placing fifth in the 100 back her junior year. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors.

She told Swimming World:

“After my official visit to Lehigh, I knew that it was the place for me. I felt like I fit right in with the team and had a great connection with both Coach Herb and Coach Bugby. I loved seeing the team’s dedication to academics while also competing on an outstanding swim team. I want to thank my family, coaches and friends for helping me along in this process. Can’t wait to be a Mountain Hawk!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 24.31
  • 100 free – 52.37
  • 50 back – 26.12
  • 100 back – 55.99
  • 200 back – 2:04.20

Poeta will be extremely valuable for the Mountain Hawks when she arrives on campus for the 2019-20 season. Her best 100 back time would’ve scored in the B-final at the 2018 Patriot League Championships and she’ll have two years of overlap with top returning backstroker Anna Francisco.
