It is Leap Day, and swimming is no stranger to special things happening on the extra day on the calendar every four years.

First of all, Leap Day comes in an Olympic year, though four years ago, we were a couple of weeks from the COVID-19 pandemic changing that for the first time since World War II.
Leap Day 2020 was full of hope before the pandemic.
Olympian Jake Mitchell was in high school and led Carmel, Ind., to its sixth straight men’s championship.
Meanwhile, colleges were fighting for conference championship and Olympic hopefuls were preparing for Tokyo, only to have the pandemic change the world and postpone not only the Games, but all major competition for at least a year.
This year, Feb. 29 comes as the Pac-12 women, Big Ten men and Big 12 are in the middle of their conference championship meets and we will see what heroic lie ahead today.
