Lady Tar Heels Sink Cavaliers, 171-129

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Januaary 25. THE 17th-ranked Virginia women's swimming and diving team lost its first Atlantic Coast Conference meet of the season as it fell 171-129 to 15th-ranked North Carolina Sunday (January 25) at Koury Natatorium. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the ACC, while UNC improves to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

The Tar Heels won 10 of the 16 events contested as Jessi Perruquet led North Carolina with individual event victories in the 200 freestyle (1:49.04 – NCAA B), 50 free (23.71), and 100 free (50.86 – NCAA B). She also swam the anchor leg of UNC's winning 200 medley relay (1:43.63).

Sophomore Lizzy Bruce was a triple winner taking both breaststrokes — with NCAA B times of 1:03.22 for the 100 and 2:15.85 for the 200 — and swimming a leg on the victorious medley relay.

The Cavaliers won six of 16 events in the meet with first-year Kimi Kelly (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Ursuline School) winning three of those events. Kelly picked up the Cavaliers' first win of the meet in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:52.32. She led a top-four UVa sweep in the 1000 with second-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) taking second (9:54.92), fourth-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) placing third (10:02.41), and third-year Katie McWilliams (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) finishing fourth (10:06.45). Kelly's second win came in the 200 butterfly as she posted a NCAA B and personal season-best time of 1:59.40. Kelly rounded out an outstanding meet by winning the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:48.90, another NCAA B time. Kelly's teammates Rachael Burke and first-year Rory Schmidt (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) also bettered the NCAA B standard while finishing third and fourth with times of 4:52.18 and 4:53.03, respectively.

Second-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) swept the backstroke events for the Cavaliers. White won the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.23 and then touched first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.80. Second-year Corey Berg (Hyde Park, N.Y./F.D. Roosevelt) was runner-up in the 200 back with a time of 2:02.42.

Baly registered Virginia's sixth event victory in the meet as she clocked a winning time of 4:18.60 (NCAA B) in the 400 individual medley. First-year Erin Corgan (Marietta, Ga./Marist School) was second in the 400 I.M. with a time of 4:21.94 (NCAA B).
