Kenyon Men, Denison Women Win at Annual Dual Meet

The Kenyon College Lords and Ladies faced off against Division III and Conference rival the Denison University Big Red on Saturday at the James A. Steen Aquatic Center in Gambier, Ohio. The Kenyon Lords took the meet handily, cruising to a 196-104 victory, while the Denison women slipped passed the Kenyon Ladies with a 157.5-142.5 win.

Men’s Meet

The Kenyon Lords took every race but one, with six different individuals earning the top spot and Ryan Funk, Ian Reardon, Joey Duronio each claiming two first-place finishes. Funk won the 50 free (20.92) and 100 fly (50.91), Reardon took the 200 breast (2:08.08) and the 400 IM (4:06.20), while Duronio was victorious in the 200 free (1:41.96) and the 100 free (46.72).

Kenyon’s Arthur Conover won the 1000 freestyle (9:37.99), Percy Gates won the 100 back (51.88), Trevor Manz took the 100 breast (58.52), Jon Zimdars won the 200 fly (1:53.80), and David Perez took the 500 (4:41.85).

Denison’s lone first-place came from Jack Lindell, who took the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:53.15.

The Kenyon Lords also claimed both the 200 medley relay (Matthew Cooper, ManzFunk, and Gates) and the 200 freestyle relay (Funk, Gates, Duronio, and Wyatt Semenuk) with a 1:32.32 and 1:23.86, respectively.

Denison University Big Red also swept both boards at the meet, with Max Levy winning the one-meter competition with a score of 316.95, just edging out teammate Ben Lewis, who finished with a 314.18. Brian Allen won the three-meter competition with a 323.25.

Kenyon head coach Jess Book had this to say about the meet: “I think we fulfilled our goal to compete, which is all we’re trying to do at this point in the season. I’m happy with what we did today.”

Women’s Meet

The Kenyon Ladies and the Denison Big Red had a much harder fought battle than the men’s meet, with Denison edging out Kenyon with 10 events won to Kenyon’s six.

Denison was led by Carolyn Kane, who took the 50 free (23.72) and the 100 fly (57.24), Ashley Yearwood, winning the 100 back (57.98) and the 100 free (52.23), and Marissa Bednarek, who took the 200 breast (2:20.39) and tied Kenyon’s Katie Kaestner for the 100 breast (1:04.10). Campbell Costley’s sub-5 minute 500 (4:59.89) and Halli Garza rounded out the individual wins for the Big Red with her victory in the 200 fly (2:04.22). Denison’s Eva Vivero’s victory on the three-meter competition, with a score of 213.75 points, also helped them out.

Victorious Kenyon Ladies included Mariah Williamson’s victory in the 1000 (10:15.56), Abby Wilson, who took the 200 free (1:51.71), Kaestner’s tie with Bednarek in the 100 breast, Caitlyn Foley, winning the 200 back (2:06.61), and Marysol Arce, who took the 400 IM (4:29.84). Maria Zarka dominated the one-meter competition, with a score of 269.40, over 60 points higher than her nearest competitor.

The Big Red women also took both relays. The team of Kane, Bednarek, Yearwood and Mary Van Leuven won the 200 medley (1:44.90), while Kane, Yearwood, Kate Wright, and Van Leuven took the 200 free (1:34.41).

“We always love coming here to swim,” Denison head coach Gregg Parini said of the meet.
