Kenyon Completes Its “Drive for 25,” with Victory in the Men’s NCAA Div. III Championships

ST. PETERS, MO., March 20. YOU were perhaps expecting someone else to win?

Maybe you thought Emory would have no trouble making up its 200-point deficit on Day 3 or that Carnegie-Mellon would enlist the services of Anthony Ervin, Michael Phelps and Aaron Peirsol while sweeping to victory?

Hey, wake up! We're talking about mighty Kenyon here, not Stanford's men's basketball team or even Gonzaga's!

This is the school that had won 24-consecutive men's NCAA Davison III swimming and diving championships going into tonight's finals and was on a "drive for 25." Think they're going to go in the tank (literally) for anyone?

Not a chance.

Following on the heels of their women's team championship here last weekend, Coach Jim Steen's Kenyon Lords won their 25th-straight title here at Principia College's Rec-Plex, with a resounding 678.5 – 446 triumph over Emory. Coach Dave Belovich's surprising Carnegie-Mellon "Robber Barons" (307) were third. It was CMU's highest placing in the meet's 30-year history.

Steen's 25th-straight men's title is the longest such streak in any sport in any division in NCAA/collegiate history. However, it's NOT the most crowns by any school in any single sport. Just swimming.

The overall champ is Oklahoma State, which earlier tonight won the Cowboys' 32nd NCAA Div. 1 wrestling championship (but not in succession of course). Kenyon has also won 20 of the last 21 women's titles, including the last three-straight.

St. Peters has been very good to Kenyon. The Lords won the last time the championship was here ('98), scoring the second-highest point-total in history (726) to runner-up U Cal San Diego's 395. The most points scored is 756.5 by Kenyon last season in its win over Johns Hopkins. This year's winning score is fourth-highest and, not surprisingly, Kenyon has numbers 1 (756.5, in 2003), 2 (726 in 1998) and 3 (687, in 1995).

Carnegie-Mellon had an excellent meet, with senior Brian McCarthy winning the 400 IM in a Div. III record 3:53.99, snapping Whitworth's Kevin Wang's two-year win streak; and teammate Chris Pearson winning the 200 free (CMU record 1:37.70) and splashing to a runner-up finish tonight in the 200 fly (1:49.10). McCarthy also won the 200 IM two seasons ago but Pearson's win was his initial title and the school's fourth overall.

Kenyon had a trio of winners on the final day of racing to complement its 400 freestyle relay victory in the second-fastest time on record (2:58.13). The Lords hold the divisional standard with their 2:57.98 from six years ago.

Lord junior Elliott Rushton, already a double gold-medalist (500 free, leadoff leg of 800 free relay), stroked to a Kenyon- and meet-record 15:21.69 win in the 1650, his second-consecutive mile triumph. He just missed Hopkins' Scott Armstrong's Div. III record of 15:20.62 from a meet at the Naval Academy in December of '02. Rushton will be back next season to try and accomplish two goals: 1) three-peat; and 2) become the first non-Div. I swimmer ever under 15:00.0.

(As mentioned in the first day's report, Elliott's brother, Tom, also a Kenyon All-America, is the only swimmer to win the 500 free four-consecutive years ['98-'01] He also won back-to-back 400 IMs ('99-'00) while Elliott was third in that event.)

Since 1991, Kenyon has "owned" the mile, winning every year. Prior to Rushton's latest double, Mike Boromo three-peated from '00 to '02. The Lords had another three-peater in Torsen Seifert but his was not consecutive as he won in '95-'96 and again in '98. Hopkins' Tim Collins ('78-'80) and St. Olaf's Kevin Casson ('87-'89) are the other consecutive triplers.

Next was the 200 back, where Emory junior Chris Halstad stopped Kenyon's Leonardo Monteiro's win streak at two with his 1:48.13-1:48.48 win. Halstad, fifth in the 100 back, swam an Emory record for the victory. His win also halted Kenyon’s five-year stronghold on the top spot. Estevao Avila three-peated from '99 through '01 before handing over the reins to Monteiro. The latter set a Div. III record (1:47.21) two seasons ago and won last year in 1:48.51.

Now it was time for Kenyon senior Marc Courtney-Brooks, double-defending 100 free champ and a winner opening night in the 200 IM, to try for his three-peat. Forty-four point twenty-three seconds later he had it, a pr and third-quickest Div. III 100 on record. Only former Lord sprint king Jim Born (43.96 in '86) and Denison's Aaron Cole (44.21 in 2000) are faster. Born has the divisional-record with his 43.48 from a an invitational at Eastern Michigan in December of '85.

Courtney-Brooks also anchored the winning 400 free relay team and swam on two other winning relays, the 400 medley and 800 free. He finishes his brilliant career with 21 overall titles and his loss represents such a serious void for next year that Steen is thinking about having him cloned!

Second was Kenyon's Thomas Ashby (45.77). Mt. Union's Eddis Singleton, 50 free champ, was fourth. Singleton's two-lap win made him a three-peater too, having won titles in '01 and '03. His Mt. Union record (20.07 from last season) is the division’s third-fastest winning time behind Kenyon's Ken Heis' 19.94 and Cole's 20.06. Cole ranks as the No. 1 50 freestyler overall with his 19.90 leadoff leg on Denison's 200 free relay from the '99 Championships at Minneapolis.

(Interestingly, Denison's coach is Greg Parini, who won two 50 and one 100 free titles in '80-'81 for Kenyon. He also was a member of the Lords' first two NCAA championship squads. His women's team halted Kenyon's 17-year championship win streak in '01.)

In the 200 breast, Amherst senior captain Mike Pohorylo scored his second victory with a pr and Amherst-record 2:00.97. He won the 100 with a pr 56.20. Kenyon rookie Joseph Gosselar made the winner work, clocking a pr 2:01.97 for runner-up; and teammate Davis Zairns, consols final 100 champ, was likewise No. 1 in the 200 consols.

Pohorylo's time is fourth on the all-time performances' list (second performer). Hope's Joshua Boss, the race's only four-peater ('99-'02), has the fastest other times — a record 1:58.90 from '01, 1:59.38 the following season and 2:00.53 his "rookie" year ['99].

The final individual race was the 200 fly, where 100 champ Andrejs Duda was going for win No. 2 and a repeat of his triumph last season. He didn't disappoint either, taking home the gold with Carnegie Mellon's Person second.

Springfield's Mike Smith (488.15) won the 3-meter springboard competition over Merchant Marine's Joel Meyer(480.10) although the latter was named Diver of the Year. He won the 1-meter board.

The concluding 400 free relay saw Duda give Kenyon clean water with his fastest opening leg of 44.97 and the Lords raced to a swift 2:58.13 clocking, just off their record 2:57.98 from six years prior. The win gave Kenyon its third-consecutive relay sweep and their 10th-straight 400 free relay triumph. The Lords are the only Div. III school under 3:00.0,the only one under 3:20.0 in the 400 medley, the only one under 1:20.0 in the 200 free, the only sub 6:40.0 in the 800 free and (need we say it?) under 1:30.0 in the 200 medley.

In the latter race, since its introduction in '88, Kenyon has won every year except '90 (UCSD) and again five years later when Hope took the victory. Its record is 1:28.75 from '01. Had it not been for Denison winning the 200 free relay four years ago, Kenyon's relay streak would extend that far back too.
