Kenya Swim Federation Takes Action in Sex Scandal, Women Lawyers Demand Prosecution

By William Njunga

NAIROBI, September 12. THE Kenya Swimming Federation (KSF) has suspended its Nairobi city branch over allegations of mismanagement. Subsequently the association has appointed a caretaker committee to run the affairs of the branch.

KSF chairman, Ben Ekumbo, said as a result of the prevailing circumstances, the elections earlier scheduled for tomorrow have also been postponed indefinitely.

Ekumbo said as the parent body, the KSF would like to see Nairobi Amateur Swimming Association (NASA) management given to people of high integrity, capable of safe-guarding the assets and finances of NASA.

Those in the committee are Aish Jeneby (chairman), Mary Onyango, Aston Ercolano, Ochieng DA, Andy Kimwele, Raj Walia, Zeff Ekumbo and Mutinda Kisio.

The committee’s terms of reference will revolves around overseeing a smooth transition within NASA and managing all the NASA affairs for a period of three months.

Ekumbo said the Annual General Meeting (AGM) earlier scheduled for this weekend will also not take place as the right procedure in notifying members had not been followed.

The KSF move comes only a week after five NASA officials were suspended for three years each for allegedly mismanaging a trip to Zambia in March.

Meanwhile, Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has called for the prosecution of the five officials. FIDA executive director, Jane Kiragu, said the culprits should be brought to book in a court of law and expressed concern over the future of the sport.

"Parents have entrusted their children with officials yet they are the same people, who are misbehaving," said Kiragu.

She said the action taken against the officials was too lenient and called for a total overhaul of the swimming fraternity.

She said the officials deserved a life ban from all sporting activities. She said re-admitting such officials back after the expiry of their three-year ban was a slap in the face to the affected parties.

She said cases of sexual misconduct in the fraternity were not only on the increase but were also disturbing especially to sportswomen.
