NEW COMMIT: The University of Kentucky has gotten an early start to their Class of 2025 recruiting game, snagging a verbal commitment from Madeline Wenig. The Brookfield, Ill. native will arrive in Lexington at the start of the 2021-22 season.

A talented breaststroker and IMer, Wenig does her club swimming with Academy Bullets Swim Club and most recently placed eighth in the 200m breast at NCSAs this past summer after taking second in that event at Illinois LCM Senior. Last winter, she placed third in the 200 breast and fourth in the 100 breast at Illinois SCY Seniors before going on to record a pair of best times at NCSAs.

A current junior at Riverside Brookfield High School, Wenig competed in the 100 breast at the Illinois State Championships during both her freshman and sophomore seasons. She has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors twice in her career so far.

She told Swimming World:

“I am beyond thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Kentucky!!! I want to thank my parents, coaches, and friends who have helped me through this process and to find my dream college!! I’m so excited to be part of the UK family and can’t wait til I get there!! I am especially thankful for the opportunity given by the coaches to swim as a UK Wildcat!!! #GOCATS”

Her best times include:

  • 50 breast – 29.75
  • 100 breast – 1:04.13
  • 200 breast – 2:16.50
  • 200 IM – 2:08.55

Wenig will add valuable breaststroke and IM depth when suits up for the Wildcats in the fall of 2021. Even with just under two years of club swimming to go, she’s already on the outskirts of scoring range at the SEC Championships and will surely look to capitalize on her recent long course success this upcoming short course season.
