NEW COMMIT: El Paso, Texas backstroker Maddie Deucher has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Kentucky and will suit up for the Wildcats in the fall of 2019.

Deucher swims year-round with Austin Swim Club and is a Winter Junior qualifier in both backstroke events. She won the 50/100 back and was the 200 back runner-up at the ST Senior Circuit this summer after recording a personal best at Austin Sectionals. She raced five events at the American SCY Championships in March where her highest finish was a 10th-place showing in the 200 back.

Deucher competed at the UIL Texas 6A State Championships as a junior for Westlake High School after placing fourth in the 100 back at the Region 3 meet two weeks prior. She also placed eighth in that event at the 5A Championships during her freshman season.

She told Swimming World:

“It is with Gods’ guidance that I am giving my verbal commitment to the University of Kentucky to further my education and swimming career. I’m thrilled to be a new addition to such a great family and #backstrokeU! GO CATS!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 26.28
  • 100 back – 56.68
  • 200 back – 1:59.75
  • 50 free – 24.67

When she arrives in Lexington as a member of the class of 2023, she will join an extremely talented backstroke group that includes Asia Seidt and Ali Galyer who placed second and fifth, respectively, in the 200 back at 2018 NCAAs. Although she currently sits outside of scoring range at the SEC Championships, she has made significant improvements each season with a year of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Wildcats.
