Kentucky State Champion Mackenzie Lanning Verbally Commits to Northwestern’s Class of 2026

NEW COMMIT: Northwestern University has received a new verbal commitment for the 2022-23 season from U.S. Open qualifier Mackenzie Lanning of Louisville, Ky.

She will join Riley Huddleston of Columbus, Ohio, as a member of the Wildcats’ Class of 2026.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am so incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Northwestern University! Big thank you to my friends, family, and coaches for all their support along the way! Can’t wait to be a part of the Wildcat family! Go ‘Cats! ??

An extremely versatile swimmer, Lanning does her club swimming with Lakeside Swim Team and finaled in three events at the TYR Pro Swim Series – Des Moines in March. She also finished 19th in the 200 back at Juniors East last December.

In Summer 2019, she was a six-time finalist at Greensboro Sectionals before going on to win the 1500m free at the Kentucky 13&O LCM Championships. Lanning also raced three events at Junior Nationals.

Her best times include:

  • 100 free – 52.44
  • 200 free – 1:49.40
  • 500 free – 4:51.24
  • 1650 free – 17:09.32
  • 100 back – 55.40
  • 200 back – 1:58.36
  • 100 fly – 56.77
  • 200 fly – 2:03.57
  • 200 IM – 2:05.55
  • 400 IM – 4:25.08

Currently a junior at Sacred Heart Academy, Lanning is already a four-time individual Kentucky State Championship finalist. She won the 200 free and 500 free during her sophomore season while taking third and fifth, respectively, in those events as a freshman.

The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American helped her team clinch their eighth-straight state title in 2020.

Lanning will make a big impact both individually and on relays when she suits up for the Wildcats in the fall of 2022 and will add her talents to a training group that’ll include Emma LepisovaAshley Strouse, and Ally Larson. Katie Robinson has recently been tabbed Northwestern’s new head coach.
