NEW COMMIT: The University of California – Santa Barbara has picked up an in-state verbal commitment from distance swimmer Kennan Hotchkiss. His older brother, Logan Hotchkiss, is currently a senior for the Gauchos and also specializes in freestyle.

A native of Malibu, Calif., Hotchkiss swims year-round with Malibu Seawolves Swimming and is a Winter Juniors qualifier in the 800m free with a Winter Nationals cut in the mile. He achieved 100% personal best times at the Los Angeles Invitational in July where he finished fifth in the 1500m free and sixth in the 800m free. He also posted a pair of top-5 finishes at Speedo Champions Series in December. Hotchkiss finished third in the 500 free and fifth in the 200 free at CIF-Southern DIII Championships as a junior for Malibu High School.

He told Swimming World:

“I am excited and honored to be able to commit to UCSB. I look forward to living on a campus that is close to the beach and and has the feel of a classic beach town, as well as pursuing my academic interests in the sciences at such a respected university. The team and coaches are great. I hope to represent the Gauchos well and swim with teammates at NCAA nationals in the future.”

His best times include:

  • 500 free – 4:35.47
  • 1000 free – 9:37.38
  • 1650 free – 15:55.59

Hotchkiss will be valuable to UCSB’s distance group and will join a training squad that includes Joe Lastelic and Jake Rollo. He would’ve scored in the B-final of the 500 free at the 2018 MPSF Championships where the Gauchos earned their second-straight conference title.
