A time trial opportunity for Japanese backstroker Junya Koga turned into a new U.S. Open record in the 50-meter back at the Long Course Speedo Sectionals in Athens, GA. The U.S. Open record is the fastest time recorded in any event on American soil regardless of the swimmer’s nationality.
Koga, who swims for Club Wolverine in Michigan, turned in a blazing 24.50 besting Camille Lacourt’s world best of 24.56. Koga’s new U.S. Open record replaces David Plummer’s 24.52 from the 2013 Nationals.
