Junior Pan Pacs – Day 2 Prelims: Erin Gemmell Seeking Second Title; Japan Sizzles in 400 IM
Based on action during the second prelims session at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships, the evening finals should produce some superb performances. In addition to an NAG (15-16) record from the United States’ Thomas Heilman in the 100-meter freestyle, Erin Gemmell shined in the women’s version of the event and Japan’s Ei Kamikawabata was superb in the 400 individual medley.
One night after winning the 200 freestyle, Gemmell positioned herself for a run at the title in the 100 free. The University of Texas recruit registered a meet-record time of 54.42, to lead Australia’s Milla Jansen (54.53). In the next event, Heilman clocked 49.06 in the 100 freestyle to break Caeleb Dressel’s 2013 NAG record of 49.28. In the final, Heilman and Australian rising star Flynn Southam will duel for the gold medal.
Kamikawabata is providing Japan with promise in the medley events beyond the days of Kosuke Hagino and Daiya Seto. The youngster topped qualifying in the 400 IM behind a time of 4:14.95. His compatriot, Mio Narita, earned the No. 1 seed in the women’s 400 medley, on the strength of a swim of 4:42.33.
The top seeds for the finals of the 100 breaststroke events were claimed by Team USA’s Piper Enge (1:08.38) and Japan’s Yamato Okadome (1:00.70).
