NEW COMMIT: The University of Pittsburgh has received their first early verbal commitment for the 2022-23 season and beyond from Junior National qualifier Angelina Messina of St. Charles, Ill.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited and blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Pittsburgh!! I would like to give a huge thank you to my family, coaches, and friends who have helped along the way. So excited for the next chapter! GO PANTHERS #H2P”

A talented breaststroker and IMer, Messina does her club swimming with St. Charles Swim Team and recorded a pair of top-12 finishes at Illinois Seniors in March. Last December, she competed in both breaststroke events at Juniors West.

In Summer 2019, she placed 11th in the 200m breast at Illinois LCM Seniors before going on to grab silver in that event as well as bronze in the 100m breast and 200m IM at Illinois LCM Age Groups.

Her best times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:03.85
  • 200 breast – 2:16.43
  • 200 IM – 2:02.59
  • 400 IM – 4:27.65

Currently a junior at St. Charles North High School, Messina competed at the Illinois State Championships during her freshman and sophomore seasons. As a junior, she earned gold in both the 100 breast and 200 IM at the IHSA St. Charles Sectional Championships.

Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Panthers as a member of the Class of 2026, Messina will add valuable breaststroke and IM depth to their lineup. She would’ve been their fastest 200 breaststroker and ranked fourth on the team in the 100 breast and 200 IM last season.
