NEW COMMIT: Brigham Young University has picked up a big verbal commitment from in-state standout Tanner Nelson of South Jordan, Utah, for the fall of 2021.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“Excited to announce my verbal commitment to Brigham Young University! I would like to thank my friends, family, and coaches in helping me through this process! I can’t wait to be a cougar! GO COUGS!”

Nelson, who does his club swimming with Utah Valley Aquatics, owns eight U.S. Open and Junior National standards. He most recently collected three golds and two silvers at Utah Seniors after placing fourth in the 1000 free and ninth in the 500 free, and 11th in the 400 IM at Juniors West.

Last summer, he won all seven of his events at Utah LCM Seniors before going on to win the 200m IM and 400m IM at Des Moines Futures where he also finished third in the 200m breast.

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:40.66
  • 500 free – 4:24.33
  • 1000 free – 9:20.30
  • 1650 free – 15:33.70
  • 200 IM – 1:51.10
  • 400 IM – 3:53.21
  • 100 back – 53.27
  • 200 back – 1:51.50
  • 100 breast – 57.79
  • 200 breast – 2:03.57

Given Nelson’s impressive versatility, he could find himself in a number of different events during his four years in Provo. Even with just over a year to go before suiting up for the Cougars in the fall of 2021, he will make an immediate impact.

He would’ve scored in the A-final of the 500 free and 400 IM as well as the B-final of the 200 IM and 200 back, and place top-4 of the mile, at the 2020 MPSF Championships where Brigham Young finished second overall in the team standings.
