NEW COMMIT: Carmel, Ind. freestyler Jake Mitchell has verbally committed to the University of Michigan and will suit up for the Wolverines in the fall of 2020.

Mitchell swims year-round with Carmel Swim Club and owns five Summer National cuts with the U.S. Open standards in the 200/500 free. He most recently competed at Juniors East in December where he placed third in the mile, fourth in the 500 free and ninth in the 200 free. The NISCA All-American achieved 100% lifetime bests at Junior Nationals this past summer where he was the runner-up in the mile. Also competing for Carmel High School, Mitchell won the 500 free at the Indiana State Championships during his sophomore season.

He told Swimming World:

“I’m excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming careers at the University of Michigan! The coaches and swimmers really made Michigan feel like a second home and I can not wait to be a part of such an amazing team! Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way! GO BLUE”

His best times include:

  • 100 free – 45.57
  • 200 free – 1:36.86
  • 500 free – 4:21.67
  • 1650 free – 15:09.39
  • 200 back – 1:48.66
  • 400 IM – 3:55.36

Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before arriving in Ann Arbor next fall, Mitchell would’ve scored in the B-final of the 500 free, C-final of the 200 free and would’ve placed 13th in the mile at the 2018 Big Ten Championships. He’ll have one year of overlap with Ricardo Vargas who placed seventh in the mile and eighth in the 500 free at NCAAs last season.
