Junior National Finalist Carly Afanasewicz Verbals to Georgia for 2027
NEW COMMIT: The University of Georgia has received a new verbal commitment for the 2027-28 season and beyond from Carly Afanasewicz of Pearl River, New York. She is a Junior National qualifier who excels in backstroke and IM.
Afanasewicz had originally committed to NC State before flipping her commitment.
Regarding her commitment, she said:
“After much thought and consideration, I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Georgia. I am beyond grateful for my parents, my coaches, especially Coach Ryan and Coach Don, and all my friends and their support throughout this journey. A huge thank you to the Georgia coaches, especially Coach Fernando and Coach Stef, for giving me this opportunity. I can’t wait to be a part of such an amazing team. Go Dawgs!!”
Afanasewicz trains year-round with Phoenix Aquatic Club and most recently competed at the Metropolitan Long Course Senior Championships where she earned five top-4 finishes, including three silver medals. She placed seventh in the 200 back and eighth in the 400 IM at Juniors East last December and swept all three backstroke events, plus won the 400 IM, at Ithaca Speedo Sectionals in March.

- 100 back – 52.55
- 200 back – 1:53.40
- 100 fly – 53.71
- 100 free – 50.45
- 200 free – 1:48.87
- 500 free – 4:51.16
Afanasewicz is a rising senior at Pearl River High School. She is a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
Georgia finished sixth at the 2026 Southeastern Conference Championships before taking 15th at the 2026 NCAA Championships. Afanasewicz would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 back and 400 IM at last season’s conference meet, while also placing in the B-final of the 100 back and the C-final of the 200 IM.
