NEW COMMIT: The NC State Wolfpack has picked up a verbal commitment for the fall of 2021 from versatile Arsenio Bustos. The Orange, Conn. native will arrive in Raleigh as a member of the class of 2025.

Jack-of-all-trades Bustos does his club swimming with Woodbridge Aquatic Club and owns seven U.S Open standards. At Junior Nationals this past summer, he finished fifth in the 100m fly and 200m IM, 10th in the 100m free and 21st in the 100m breast after winning six events at Connecticut LCM Seniors.

He recorded three best times at Juniors East last winter before going on to take the top spot in five different events at Connecticut SCY Seniors. He also earned gold in the 200 IM with five additional top-5 finishes at Ithaca Speedo Sectionals in March. A current junior at Amity Regional High School, Bustos finished fifth in the 100 breast and sixth in the 200 IM at the Connecticut Open State Championships during his freshman season.

He told Swimming World:

“I’m so proud to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at NC State University! I can’t wait to be a part of such an amazing team and program! Thank you to all of my family, friends and coaches who have made this whole thing possible. Go Pack!”

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 20.59
  • 100 free – 44.87
  • 200 free – 1:39.54
  • 50 back – 22.70
  • 100 back – 49.43
  • 100 breast – 55.38
  • 200 breast – 2:00.51
  • 100 fly – 50.50
  • 200 IM – 1:48.35

Bustos’ versatility will be extremely beneficial for NC State and he could find himself in a number of different events. He has made major improvements the past year, dropping two seconds in the 100 breast, six seconds in the 200 breast/200 IM, three seconds in the 50/100 free, and seven seconds in the 200 free.

Although he’s not in scoring range at the ACC Championships just yet, Bustos still has two years of club swimming to go before suiting up for the Wolfpack. He’ll also look to capitalize on his recent long course success heading into the upcoming short course season and will surely continue to improve before the fall of 2021.
