Junior National 200 IM Champion Cullen Kahl Verbals to Cal for 2028
NEW COMMIT: The University of California, Berkeley has landed another huge verbal commitment for Fall 2028, this time from Cullen Kahl of Spring, Texas. Kahl is a member of the 2026-27 U.S. National Junior Team in the 200 and 400 IM.
He will join Kai Joyner in Berkeley as a member of the Golden Bears’ Class of 2032.
Regarding his commitment, he said:
“I am honored and extremely grateful to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic career at The University of California, Berkeley! I want to thank my mom, dad, sister, and all of my supportive extended family for always showing up for me, sacrificing time and resources, and taking me to different competitions around the country. I would also like to thank Coach Stu for getting me to where I am today, and Coach Shana for pushing me to always do better from day one. Shout out to my teammates, mentors, and everyone who has played a part in my journey! Finally, I would like to give a huge thank you to Coach Dave, Coach Noah, and the entire Cal swimming staff for giving me this amazing opportunity! A U.S. Open qualifier, Kahl does his club swimming with Magnolia Aquatic Club. He most recently competed at Junior Nationals where he won the 200m IM, earned silver in the 400m IM and placed fifth in the 200m breast. That was after he took 18th in the 200m IM at USA Swimming Nationals.
Last winter, Kahl finaled in three events at the U.S. Open before going on to earn three best times at Juniors West. He won the 200 IM at Justin Speedo Sectionals, also taking second in the 400 IM.
His best times include:
- 200 IM – 1:47.78
- 400 IM – 3:49.65
- 100 breast – 55.17
- 200 breast – 1:59.58
- 200 back – 1:48.07
The Golden Bears won their second straight Atlantic Coast Conference championship title in 2026 before placing seventh at the 2026 NCAA Championships. Cal has won 11 conference titles in program history.
