Judy Wilson Sets Three World Records, Jane Asher Adds Another as British Masters Tune Up for World Championships

By Andy Wilson

LEAMINGTON, England, May 18. BRITISH Masters swimmers were in record-breaking form at Leamington Spa as they limbered up for the World Masters Championships.

The Midland District meet, which ran from Friday to Sunday, May 14-16, is traditionally one of the premier early season short course (25 metres) British meets. This was also the last chance for most of the swimmers for a competitive workout prior to the World Championships.

Outstanding was the newly aged-up Judy Wilson, who set records in all of her seven individual swims, including three world record times, in the 60-64 group: the 50m (34.45) and 100m (1.16.41) butterfly, and 100m freestyle (1.10.53). She was joined in the 100m freestyle by the evergreen Jane Asher, whose 1.16.45 was a WR in the 70-74 group.

European records were claimed in the ladies' events by Jayne Ball (50-54 400 freestyle in 5.17.34) and Wilson in the 200 free (2.38.37), 400 free (5.50.14), and 200 fly (3.09.88), and in the men’s events by Alan Jackson (65-69 200 back in 2.54.20) and Nick Gillingham (35-39 200 breaststroke 2.19.83).

In addition 14 individual British records were set, along with three relay records.
