Japan Mourns Passing of Olympian Shinya Taniguchi

MIE PREFECTURE, Japan, October 10. JAPANESE Olympian Shinya Taniguchi lost his battle to stomach cancer on September 4 while under treatment in a local hospital.

Taniguchi was eighth in the 400 individual medley at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. In the heats, he set the Asian record in the event with a 4:17.36 and posted a 4:20.93 in the final.

Taniguchi retired following the 2006 Asian Games, where he was second in the 400 IM.
