Janet Evans Invitational, Day One: A Couple of 800s, A Couple of Meet Records

By Nicole Leffer

LONG BEACH, Calif., June 10. THE new Charter All Digital Aquatic Center in Long Beach, Calif., may be temporary, but Day One of the 2004 Janet Evans Invitational suggests that it is meeting its goal of being an aquatic speedway.

The meet record in the 800m freestyle fell tonight. Twice. The first record that was erased from the books was set by the meet’s namesake, Janet Evans, in 1995. The person to beat Evans’ record was Kalyn Keller, a 19-year-old from the Trojan Swim Club. Keller took over the race at the 500 meter mark and just kept pulling away, nailing her personal best time of 8:31.97.

This is the second meet record previously held by Evans that Keller has broken. The first was Evans’ 1650 yard free at Pac-10s this past short-course season.

“This one definitely means a lot more to me seeing as it’s an event that she holds the world record in,” said Keller.

Fellow Californian Hayley Peirsol came in second, clocking 8:35.06.

Both Keller and Peirsol are in the midst of their hardest training.

“I go to practice every day, work hard, and have fun. And I have a good training partner(Nicole Mackey), and it’s she and I pretty much every day,” said Peirsol. “We have fun, but we know when it’s time to get to work.”

Keller plans to swim the 200, 400, and 800 frees, as well as the 200 fly at Olympic Trials in July. Peirsol’s goal is to make the team in the 400 free, as well as the 800 free.

The second 800 meter free meet record was destroyed on the men’s side by Australia’s newest hero, Craig Stevens, who has become famous for stepping down from the 400 free in Athens to let teammate Ian Thorpe swim.

“Now its just time for Ian to get on with what he has to do and me to get on with what I have to do,” he says.

Get on with it he has done. Stevens’ time of 7:54.47 shattered the record of 8:00.32 set in 2002 by Chris Thompson.

Stevens' swim was a race to the finish against America’s Eric Vendt. The two swam stroke for stroke through most of the race, with Vendt leading through the 600. Stevens and Vendt hit the wall at the 700 at 6:58.80 and 6:59.02 respectively. The final 50 had both men breathing to the inside of the pool, watching each other as they battled to make it to the wall first. Vendt was just 6/10 of a second behind Stevens, proving that in swimming, even in a longer race, every millisecond counts.

“I was happy with the time, I wan’t too happy with the place,” said Vendt. “I’ll take that time any day of the week, but it always hurts when you get second.”

Stevens, who would rather train than race, was very happy about both his time and his place.

“I was just trying to pick it up with 100 to go. I knew Eric is a strong finisher. He always is in the 1500, so to stay in front of him makes me really happy,” said Stevens.
