NEW COMMIT: James Madison has earned another verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season and beyond from Henrico, Va. native Madison Cottrell who will join Cameron Gring as a member of the Dukes’ class of 2024.

A versatile swimmer, Cottrell swims year-round with NOVA of Virginia Aquatics and owns the Winter Juniors standard in the 100 back. She recorded a trio of best times at NCSAs in March shortly after registering four top-12 finishes at Virginia Seniors. This past summer, she notched 100% lifetime bests at Virginia LCM Seniors where her highest finish was a pair of 17th-place showings in the 200m IM and 200m breast.

Also competing for Mills E. Godwin High School, Cottrell is a six-time Virginia 5A State Championship finalist. She took sixth in the 50 free and 11th in the 100 breast as a junior after placing ninth in both the 200 IM and 100 breast during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am very excited and honored to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and education career at James Madison University! Thank you to everyone who has helped me get here today!! #godukes”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.82
  • 100 free – 53.24
  • 50 back – 26.40
  • 100 back – 56.03
  • 50 breast – 30.11
  • 100 breast – 1:04.83
  • 50 fly – 25.49
  • 100 fly – 56.55
  • 200 IM – 2:04.85

Cottrell will make an immediate impact when she arrives on campus in the fall of 2020. She would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 IM and 100 back as well as the B-final of numerous other events at the 2019 CAA Championships where James Madison earned their second-straight conference title.
